Colors of Hemanta

Hemanta, is the Samskrita name for the Fall season.

‘Hema’ means gold, and Hemanta means golden hued.

Coming from the southern India, where trees do not shed the leaves nor change their color, I never appreciated the meaning of the name till I moved to more northern latitudes .

Anyway, to make a long story short, here are some fall color pictures from around Boulder Creek, CA. By the way, California probably comes last in the list of places where people might go to see Fall colors, but what you find here is beautiful too!

Purandara Dasa and Sense of Humor

Most of us know the story of transformation of Srinivasa Nayaka to become Purandara Dasa. In fact in one composition he praises his wife as the person responsible for his change.

Purandara Dasa has also penned some very humorous songs as well. He might have been influenced by what he saw around him.

World’s Largest Tamboori

Wow! Nataraj & Vinod  (of Shiva Musicals, Malleshvara, Bengalooru) have made the worlds largest Tamboori.

This stands 11 feet tall, and weighs about 150 Kgs!

ಶಾಂತಲೆಯದೊಂದು ನೆನಪು

ನನ್ನೂರ ಸುತ್ತ ಮುತ್ತ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನಗಳಿಗೇನೂ ಕೊರತೆ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಹನ್ನೊಂದರಿಂದ ಹದಿನಾಕನೇ ಶತಮಾನದವರೆಗೆ ಹೊಯ್ಸಳರು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿರುವ ಅತಿ ಸುಂದರ ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳು ಇಲ್ಲಿವೆ. ಅದೇ ಕಾರಣಕ್ಕೆ ಎಲ್ಲೆಲ್ಲಿ ಹೋದರೂ, ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಪುಟ್ಟ ಹಳ್ಳಿಗಳಲ್ಲೂ ಶಿಲಾಶಾಸನಗಳೂ ಕಂಡುಬರುತ್ತವೆ.

ಸಾವಿರ ವರ್ಷಗಳಿಂದಲೂ ನಮ್ಮ ಊರವರು ಮರೆಯದ ಒಂದು ಹೆಸರೆಂದರೆ ಅದು ಶಾಂತಲೆಯದು. ಒಬ್ಬ ರಾಣಿಯಾಗಿ, ಒಬ್ಬ ಕಲೆಗಾರ್ತಿಯಾಗಿ ಅವಳು ಎಲ್ಲರ ಮನದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಂತುಬಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾಳೆ. ಹಳೇಬೀಡಿನ, ಬೇಲೂರಿನ ದೇವಾಲಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೋದವರು ಯಾರೂ ದೇವರೆದುರಿಗಿರುವ ನವರಂಗದ ನಡುವೆ ಇರುವ ಗುಂಡು ಜಗಲಿಯನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸಿ – ಶಾಂತಲೆ ನೃತ್ಯ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದಿದ್ದು ಇದೇ ಜಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳದೇ ಇರುವುದೇ ಇಲ್ಲ.  ಹಾಗೇ ಬೇಲೂರಿನ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ನಾಟ್ಯಸರಸ್ವತಿ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರಿನ ಶಿಲಾಬಾಲಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಕೆತ್ತಲು ಶಾಂತಲೆಯೇ ಸ್ಫೂರ್ತಿ ಎಂದು ನುಡಿಯುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ಗೆಳೆಯರೊಬ್ಬರು ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಶಾಸನ ಪದ್ಯಗಳ ಪುಸ್ತಕವೊಂದನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟರು. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಶಾಂತಲೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಪದ್ಯವೊಂದು ಕಂಡಿತು. ಆ ಶಾಸನ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿದ್ದೂ ನಮ್ಮೂರಿನಲ್ಲೇ ಅನ್ನುವುದಿನ್ನೊಂದು ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಯ!

ಆ ಪದ್ಯ ಹೀಗಿದೆ:

ಸತತಂ ನೋೞ್ಪೊಡೆ ಲಕ್ಷೀ ದೇವತೆ ರಣವ್ಯಾಪಾರದೊಳ್ ಖೞ್ಗ ದೇ
ವತೆ ಬಿಣ್ಪಿಂದಮೆ ಭೂಮಿದೇವತೆ ಜನಕ್ಕೆಲ್ಲಂದದಿಂ ಪುಣ್ಯ ದೇ
ವತೆ ವಾಗ್ದೇವತೆ ವಿದ್ಯೆಯೊಳ್ ಸಕಲ ಕಾರ್ಯೋದ್ಯೋಗದೊಳ್ ಮಂತ್ರ ದೇ
ವತೆ ನಾಥಂಗೆ ಶಾಂತಿದೇವಿಯನದಿನ್ನೇ ವಣ್ಣಿಪಂ ಬಣ್ಣಿಪಂ!

“ನೋಡಲು ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಿಯ ಸೊಬಗಿನ,  ಕಾಳಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೋದರೆ ಸಾಕ್ಷಾತ್ ಖಡ್ಗವನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದ ದೇವತೆಯಂತೆ ಕಾಣುವ, ಹಿರಿಮೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಕ್ಷಾತ್ ಭೂಮಿ ತೂಕದ, ಅಂದದಲ್ಲಿ ಪುಣ್ಯದೇವತೆಯ, ತಿಳಿವಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸರಸ್ವತಿಯ ಹೋಲುವ, ಎಲ್ಲ ಕಾರ್ಯಗಳಲ್ಲೂ  ಗಂಡನಿಗೆ ಮಂತ್ರಿಯಂತೆ ಸಲಹೆಕೊಡುವ ಆ ಶಾಂತಿದೇವಿಯನ್ನು ಹೇಗೆ ತಾನೇ ಹೊಗಳಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯ?”

ಇಂತಹ ಆಳುವವರಿದ್ದ ಊರು ನನ್ನದು ಅನ್ನುವುದೇ ಒಂದು ಹೆಮ್ಮೆಯ ಮಾತು ನನಗೆ. ಅದಕ್ಕೇ ಬ್ಲಾಗ್ ನ ತಲೆ ಬರಹದ ಚಿತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಇವತ್ತು ಈ ಪದ್ಯವೇ ಕಾಣುತ್ತಿದೆ.
